Moura,Cátia Jacira Martins de; Fajardo,Thor Vinícius Martins; Eiras,Marcelo; Silva,Fábio Nascimento da; Nickel,Osmar.
ABSTRACT: The aims of this study were to determine the prevalence of viruses in 119 samples from 32 grapevine cultivars, collected from nine vineyards in a specific grape-growing area in southeastern Brazil, perform a partial molecular characterization of 14 isolates of Grapevine Syrah virus 1 (GSyV-1) and Grapevine leafroll-associated virus 3 (GLRaV-3) and assess the coat protein genetic variability of these viruses. The detection of viruses was implemented by real-time RT-PCR (reverse transcription polymerase chain reaction) aiming to detect seven viruses and one viroid. With the exception of the Grapevine Cabernet Sauvignon reovirus (GCSV), the viruses and viroid that were evaluated were widespread in the sampled areas, often in high prevalence and...

Orobanche cumana wallr. resistance of commercial sunflower cultivars grown in Argentina JBAG
Miladinovic,D; Dedic,B; Quiróz,F; Alvarez,D; Poverene,M; Cantamutto,M.
The parasitic weed Orobanche cumana Wallr. (broomrape) is one of the major limiting factors in worldwide sunflower production. However, it is absent in the centre of origin and in the sunflower crop areas of América. It has not yet been elucidated if O. cumana naturalization in sunflower habitats in Argentina is restricted as a result of either abiotic constraints or resistance in grown commercial cultivars. The aim of the present study was to assess the degree of resistance of commercial sunflower cultivars grown in Argentina to O. cumana. More than 95% of the tested sunflower cultivars were, in general, susceptible to broomrape attack. Although three cultivars were found to evidence an acceptable response to broomrape attack, only one of them showed...

The Incidence of Agricultural Subsidies on Farmland Rental Rates: Overcoming Bias From Inertia, Expectations, and Tenancy Arrangements AgEcon
Hendricks, Nathan P.; Janzen, Joseph P.; Dhuyvetter, Kevin C..
Recent studies indicate that the effect of government subsidies on rental rates for farmland may be lower than once thought and lower than predictions from theory. However, there are still a number of unresolved issues in estimating subsidy incidence econometrically. We identify three such issues, inertia, expectations, and tenancy arrangements, and employ panel data from the state of Kansas to resolve them. Our econometric model suggests that subsidy incidence on rental rates is low in the short run, but consistent with predictions from theory in the long run.

The international view of envenoming in Brazil: myths and realities J. Venom. Anim. Toxins incl. Trop. Dis.
Bochner,Rosany.
Being distant from Brazil's great natural diversity, from its long tradition in the study of snakebites and from the fact that it is one of the few countries which has a national information system for monitoring incidents involving venomous animals, non-Brazilian researchers face risks when estimating the incidence of these accidents in the country. The present work offers a critical review of the main estimates undertaken since 1954. It is interesting to note contradictions between textual and graphic information within the same article, variations over time in the work of a same researcher and differences among distinct authors, and that all these issues remain unmentioned or undiscussed. Comparison among such estimates and the data available at the...
